“The State of Michigan occupies the ancestral, traditional, and contemporary lands of the Anishinabek – Three Fires Confederacy, the Odawa (Ottawa), Ojibwe (Chippewa), and Bodewadmi (Potawatomi). The Michigan Democratic Party recognizes historic Indigenous communities in Michigan and those forcibly removed from their homelands. I explained that I would not be going to the Legacy Award Dinner this year. I thanked her for the request. While I had her on the phone, I confirmed September 30th date. She proceeded to say that she has us on the calendar. We will have Congresswomen Elissa Slotkin as our Keynote Speaker for the Blue Wave Gala. Eaton County Commissioner Jacob Toomey will introduce the Congresswomen. Unfinished Business:
1). I need the emails and names for the newspapers from our “Political & 2nd CD party organizing committee" in your assigned districts as soon as you can get them to me. You can find the county’s your assigned on the 2nd CD Website under the "Committees” tab.
2). On August 12th, we will have one of our quarterly in-person (and on zoom) general monthly meetings (All 540 members will be invited) at the Wheatland Township Hall 201 S. Sheridan Ave. Remus, MI. from 10am-12:00pm. I was able to contact State Supreme Court Justice Elizabeth Welch and she has agree’d to be our guest speaker and will speak after the 2nd CD Congressman Candidate Michael Lynch.
** NOTE: We will not have a live auction at this event per the request of Supreme Court Justice Elizabeth Welch who does not want a fundraiser of any kind at any event that she is a guest speaker at. I promised her that we would honor her request.
New Business:
1). Oceana Democrats had Amada Mazur as a guest speaker at their recent meeting. Amanda has organized a big event scheduled for June 24th in support of Reproductive Freedom for All. If anyone is interested in helping to continue the fight for Reproductive Freedom both in Michigan and Nationally, this will be a great event to attend. The details and meeting place is on the 2nd CD website under the tab " Call to Action". I know that President Biden has said on several occasions that if he is re-elected and we all work hard to GOTV to win the U.S. Senate and U.S. House, that he will codify "Roe v Wade" federally. Janet Schultz or Lynne Cavazos, do you have any addition information you can share with us today?
2). Is there anyone else who would like to bring up any new business at this time?
County Reports:
**Due to the number of counties in the 2nd CD, County Reports will be included with the meeting minutes from today. If you haven’t already submitted them, please do so as soon as possible. I add them to our website under the "County Parties" tab.
Good and Welfare:
**Does anyone else have any other "Good and Welfare" they would like to share today?
1). Who would like to volunteer to read the Land Acknowledgement at our next months meeting?
2). I attended Oceana County Democratic Party's monthly meeting. They had Brenda Reeber of the "Starfish Buyback Program" The buyback program asks for volunteers to run in their assault-type weapons in exchange for a $300.00 grocery gift card. I was thinking if the 2nd CD Committee's and District Officers wanted to learn more about this, we could invite Brenda Reeber to be a guest speaker at one of our future meetings.
3). Saturday, June 24th MDSCC Meeting: The Michigan Democratic State Central Committee will meet in-person at UAW 600, 10550 Dix Highway, Dearborn in Western Wayne County at 11:00am on Saturday, June 24, 2023. Check-in begins at 8:00am. If you are not checked in by 10:30am, you will not be allowed to vote or counted as being at the SCC meeting per the MDP. If you need an alternate to take your place, all the alternate names and contact information is available on the 2nd CD website under the tab "State Central Committee Members".
Agenda is complete, meeting is adjourned
